MTV's Killer Halloween: Bloody Legacy
Welcome to MTV's Killer Halloween! All week long, we're looking at ten of the greatest horror movie villains of all time, and with your help, we'll determine once and for all just how powerful these murdering psychopaths and evil masterminds really are. Our contestants: Freddy Krueger ("A Nightmare on Elm Street"), Jason Voorhees ("Friday the Thirteenth"), Michael Myers ("Halloween"), Ghostface ("Scream"), Leatherface ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), Chucky ("Child's Play"), Norman Bates ("Psycho"), Pinhead ("Hellraiser"), Hannibal Lecter ("Silence of the Lambs") and Jigsaw ("Saw"). Style, weapons, personality and gross factor aside, a horror movie killer's greatest asset is the legacy he leaves behind, whether we're talking about the continued success of these murderers' respective franchises or the long history of bloodshed they've carved out in the fictional worlds they exist in. Rank the killers' haunting legacies -- one being completely forgettable, five being everlasting -- beyond the break. This is the last Killer Halloween category, and voting continues until Sunday (October 30) at 7PM EST. Check back on Halloween for all of the final results! Freddy Krueger As long as teenagers are dreaming, Freddy will be there to haunt them. After nine official films, it's certain that Freddy is here stay, and since he exists primarily in dreams, there is truly no killing this killer. Jason Voorhees Arguably, the killer that has had to suffer through the most deaths and resurrections and, more importantly, the most really bad sequels, Jason's run may have been rough, but all it takes is a lightning strike or a down wire to send him back on the hunt. Michael Myers Depending on who you ask, Michael Myers either benefitted or was hurt by two remakes by Rob Zombie, but the reboot did prove that people are still interested in the man in the William Shatner mask. Ghostface The killer who was always in on the joke and always knew the rules of the game has skewed further and further into meta-madness with each subsequent sequel, but there will always be something intriguing about the voice on the other end of the phone. Leatherface For as much as he's seen in popular culture these days, Leatherface is only associated with one truly memorable movie, and because of the original's status as a horror classic, Leatherface's legacy lives on. Chucky Years after the original run of films and then the two most recent films, "The Bride of Chucky" and "The Seed of Chucky," it's pretty much safe to say that the character is more memorable than the films, but few can forget the lovable look of evil on the creepy doll's face. Norman Bates Thankfully, few people remember the sequels. (To be fair, some people consider "Psycho III" an underappreciated classic.) But the unforgettable original film will remain one of the essential horror films for generations to come. It can be argued that there would be no slasher genre without Norman Bates, and to that end, you gotta respect the original. Pinhead Unfortunately, Pinhead's legacy has been more or less relegated to direct-to-video sequels, and similar to Chucky, the character has transcended the public knowledge of the films he starred in. Hannibal Lecter The good doctor has the power of the Academy Awards on his side. With "Silence of the Lambs" sweeping the major categories in 1992, Lecter's status as one of cinema's most memorable characters was cemented. Jigsaw Is he finally dead? There have been so many sequels it's honestly hard to say. Since 2011 was the first Halloween in 8 years where a new "Saw" film hasn't debuted, Jigsaw may be gone for good. Until they reboot, that is. Check out the results from Killer Halloween's Gross Factor poll! What he lacks in personality he more than makes up for in vomit-inducing kills, as Leatherface is the champion in the Gross Factor category! He's followed extremely closely by the inventive psychopath Jigsaw, with flesh-hungry Hannibal and dream-haunting Freddy Krueger hanging in the three and four spots. Once again, no respect for Norman Bates, who scored lowest in this category -- perhaps he'll bounce back once Legacy is measured, as there's no doubt that his influence on horror movies is immeasurable. Tom Cruise Talks Jack Reacher Casting
Exclusive: 'I'm very sensitive to it.'There are casting calls so controversial that they look likely to reduce the internet to a smoking wasteland of charred avatars and ashen memes. Michael Keaton as Batman, Daniel Craig as Bond, The Last Airbender... that kind of thing. It's fair to say that the choice of Tom Cruise to play Lee Child's towering do-gooder Jack Reacher in One Shot has smoke pouring out of the web again. With the movie currently filming in Pittsburgh, Empire tracked the man down to ask about the farrago. "Firstly, I'm very sensitive to it," Cruise explained, revealing that Child came to watch his readings. "This is Lee's book and Lee's character. Him giving me his blessing is what made me do it. If he hadn't then I wouldn't have done it." And what of the discrepancy in height - Cruise giving away more than a few inches to the clock-brained legend? "Lee told me that the reason he wrote him that size (6' 5") is because that was just one element to his character, and that opened the door to me playing him."As Cruise himself is quick to point out, he's no stranger to controversial casting. His pick to playLestat in Neil Jordan's Interview With The Vampire may have been pre-trolling, but it still caused a stink with fans of Anne Rice's novel - and, briefly, with the writer herself. No-one should doubt the actor's commitment to the role, though. "Reacher is such a great character," he enthused. "He doesn't have a cell phone, he doesn't have email. He's off the grid. He pays for things in cash. People look at things through the prism of the colours of their life, but Jack Reacher does things the way we want to sometimes. In that sense he's sort of a Dirty Harry, a James Bond, a Josey Wales."Pick up a copy of Empire's December issue from Thursday for more from Cruise on One Shot and its mythical, head-punching protagonist.

Weekend Movie Preview: 'Paranormal Activity 3' Hopes to Scare Up Big Box Office
Audiences have stayed away from movie theaters in recent weeks, but that could all change with the release of 'Paranormal Activity 3.' Does the horror sequel have enough to goose the sagging box office and hold off 'The Three Musketeers'? Absolutely! Your weekend movie preview is here. NATIONWIDE RELEASES 'Paranormal Activity 3' What's the story: The latest chapter in the smash-hit horror franchise is a prequel that heads back to 1988 to discover what happened to Katie and Kristi when they were children. If you're not familiar with the 'PA' mythology, click here. Box-office projection: Thanks to a lack of competition -- and a lack of horror movies in general -- plus pent-up audience anticipation to see something this month that feels like an event, expect the box-office figures for 'Paranormal Activity 3' to go through the roof. Paramount has done a great job marketing the film -- from 'Catfish' directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost -- and with goodwill toward the franchise still running at solid levels heading into the third outing, grosses upward of $40 million feel almost reasonable. If you're feeling frisky, you can bet the over. Moviefone is feeling frisky. $46.7 million [Showtimes & Tickets] 'The Three Musketeers' What's the story: All for one, one for 3D surcharges! From director Paul W.S. Anderson ('Resident Evil,' 'Death Race,' 'Event Horizon') comes a re-imagining of the Alexandre Dumas literary classic, complete with extra dimensions, explosions, and Orlando Bloom and Christophe Waltz chewing scenery opposte the musketeers (Ray Stevenson, Matthew Macfayden and Luke Evans) and D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman). Anderson's wife, Milla Jovovich, co-stars. Box-office projection: Here's one for the foreign markets. While 'The Three Musketeers' might not have much life at the domestic box office, it could take off overseas thanks to its cast and the lure of 3D, which still a draw outside the United States. That's not to say 'The Three Musketeers' will be a total wash-out here: Anderson is usually good for an opening in double-digits, and with Lerman, Jovovich, Evans and Bloom, there are enough stars to get non-horror fans -- the ones not busy with 'Paranormal Activity' -- to plunk down hard earned cash for a ticket. $11.1 million [Showtimes & Tickets] 'Johnny English Reborn' What's the story: Rowan Atkinson stars as Johnny English, not-sauve super spy trying to stop the assassination of the Chinese premiere. Box-office projection: The good news: 'Johnny English Reborn' has already earned $90 million overseas. This thing is a hit! The bad news: It won't earn very much here in the US, despite the fact that 'Johnny English' grabbed $9 million during its opening weekend in 2003. 2003! Have Atkinson fans been champing at the bit for the last eight years to see this sequel? Doubtful. $4.2 million [Showtimes & Tickets] 'The Mighty Macs' What's the story: Carla Gugino stars as Kathy Rush, a women's basketball coach in the 1970s who helped a struggling Catholic school win a national championship. Box-office projection: You likely haven't heard of 'The Mighty Macs' -- one of the quietest 1000-screen releases of 2011 -- but the heartwarming true story and G-rating could be a draw for family audiences tired of 'Real Steel' and 'The Lion King 3D.' That's not to say this one will be a 'Courageous'-style hit: feel-good or not, movies need some advanced buzz to make a dent in this marketplace. 'Mighty Macs' has none. Too bad. $2.1 million [Showtimes & Tickets] LIMITED RELEASES Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes -- two potential Oscar nominees -- lead 'Martha Marcy May Marlene,' an indie drama about a woman who escapes from a cult in upstate NY. Zachary Quinto heads an all-star cast in the well-received financial drama 'Margin Call.' Sundance fave 'Being Elmo' hits theaters. In Honor of the Fine New Footloose Soundtrack, 5 Great Covers of '80s Movie Anthems
I can’t help that the new Footloose movie’s soundtrack is excellent. Trust me, I resisted, but the new collection of old tunes is a proper tribute to Kenny Loggins’s heyday and a thoroughly modern update. Accordingly, we’re revisiting five other covers of ’80s soundtrack gems. Let’s hear it for these five great cover versions; let’s give them all a hand! Alison Krauss, “9 to 5” The 26-time Grammy winner and kickass Robert Plant collaborator covered Dolly Parton’s 1980 typewriter jam for the tribute album Just Because I’m a Woman: Songs of Dolly Parton. This slowed-down version gets saloon grit on Jane Fonda’s ascot. Franz Ferdinand, “Call Me” The coolest band of the ’00s toasted Blondie’s megahit from American Gigolo with a crunchy rock take. If Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton enjoyed pay-pleasure today, I imagine they’d want this playing in the background. Buffy Sainte Marie, “Up Where We Belong” This schmaltzy Oscar winner (perhaps the most dubious victory ever in the category) originally sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes turns into a sweet lullaby when one of the song’s original writers, Buffy Sainte Marie, puts her spin on it. So lovely and earthy and fully inhabited — unlike An Officer and a Gentleman. Patti Smith, “When Doves Cry” When she’s not scooping up National Book Awards or covering Nirvana classics, Patti Smith often takes stabs at other well-known tunes. One of her best renditions is of Prince’s Purple Rain phenomenon “When Doves Cry.” Dig, if you will, the passion! Crystal Bowersox, “I’m Alright” American Idol’s ninth season was a dud, which is most unfortunate because Crystal Bowersox is one of the finest, coolest talents the show has ever known. As a toast to Kenny Loggins during “Songs from the Cinema” week, the blonde busker howled the Caddyshack theme with astonishing resonance. As Ellen Degeneres and Kara DioGuardi correctly note, she ended up improving on the tune altogether. Blake Shelton, “Footloose” For the hell of it, here’s an official cut from the new film. Ah, country videos featuring performances on the back of pick-up trucks. A national pastime. Here, The Voice guru Blake Shelton kicks off his Sunday spurs and trills the tune that makes Kenny Wormald jive and thrust. At least he didn’t have to sing “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” in a Deniece Williams falsetto.

Rabe to head Bertelsmann
BERLIN -- German media giant Bertelsmann has tapped Thomas Rabe, currently the conglom's chief financial officer, as chairman and CEO effective January. Rabe replaces topper Hartmut Ostrowski, who is ankling the post after just four years. Ostrowski, who will take a seat on Bertelsmann's supervisory board, is stepping down for personal reasons, the company said, adding that the "changeover takes place amicably and by mutual consent." The unexpected executive shakeup comes as a surprise: Bertelsmann, whose main assets include pan-European broadcasting and production powerhouse RTL Group, U.S. publishing giant Random House and Gruner + Jahr, Europe's biggest magazine publisher, is on a solid footing: Last year it exceeded its profit forecast as earnings skyrocketed from Euros 35 million ($47.8 million) to $895 million, while revenue rose 4.5% to $21.56 million. In the first half of this year the group saw earnings increase nearly 10% to $367 million as sales climbed 2% to $9.8 billion. Rabe has served as Bertelsmann's chief financial officer and head of its corporate center since 2006. Prior to that, he had held the same post at RTL Group. In addition to his duties as finance chief, Rabe is also responsible for Bertelsmann's corporate investments growth initiatives, which include the holding in the music rights company BMG, and the Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments and Bertelsmann Asia Investments funds. Gunter Thielen, former Bertelsmann CEO and current chairman of the company's supervisory board, said of Rabe, "We are sure that in him, we have an entrepreneur at the top who will lend further momentum to Bertelsmann's growth strategy and future development." Bertelsmann will name a new chief financial officer at a later date. Thielen also praised the outgoing CEO. "Bertelsmann owes Hartmut Ostrowski a great debt of gratitude. He led the company in difficult times. I look forward to continuing to work with him on the supervisory board. The timing of the changeover ensures that the passing of the baton to Thomas Rabe will be handled smoothly." Ostrowski, who joined Bertelsmann in 1982, has worked for the company in various positions, becoming CEO of the group's service company Arvato in 2002, and replacing Thielen as group topper in 2008. During his four years at the job, Ostrowski successfully steered Bertelsmann through the recent economic crisis, paid down the group's debt to the target level and expanded the Arvato unit, which grew out of Bertelsmann's printing arm, into an international services company with some 63,000 employees worldwide. Morelia's 2009 doc competition champion, 'Presumed Guilty,' continued to boffo box office in Mexico.Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio preemed his film 'Alamar' last year. The Morelia festival has quickly established itself like a forum for emerging youthful Mexican filmmakers, creating an environment of artistic experimentation not even close to the wheeling-dealing hullabaloo of festival marketplaces. But a swath of success tales underscores the festival's impact like a font of film talent. Especially thinking about that, since 2008, Morelia's short champion qualifies for submission for Oscar consideration, and photos with top plaudits go onto screen at Cannes Critics' Week.To begin with, Elisa Burns required Morelia's 2006 short prize with "Ver llover," which in turn continued to win Cannes' video clip Palme d'Or in 2007.This Year, Burns introduced "Alicia, Go Yonder" to Morelia -- it had been acquired by telemarketer Funny Balloons prior to going onto play Rotterdam. From Mantarraya Films, Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio's "Alamar" preemed at Morelia last year, won its fiction feature prize, and after being acquired by telemarketer MK2, was offered to around 20 areas.Their email list continues: First-time helmer Mariana Chenillo required the crowd prize with 2009's "Without Nora," then a tell you second-tier fests, creating 15 territory sales and theater runs in 40 U.S. metropolitan areas.Morelia doc entry "Presumed Guilty" -- a scathing indictment from the Mexican judicial system -- designed a huge impact in the Mexican B.O. and won the fest's 2009 doc prize.Festival leader Alejandro Ramirez, also Boss of Mexico's top exhib Cinepolis, am moved through the project that whenever 2 yrs of problematic distribution deals, he opened up a distrib wing of Cinepolis to screen the film in Mexico in Feb.It grew to become Mexico's top-grossing docu ever, causing a countrywide debate concerning the judicial system that continues even today.Morelia's effect on the docu world looks to possess been bolstered considerably in "Presumed Guilty's" aftermath. A lot to ensure that coordinators from the doc-only festival Ambulante, founded by thesps Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, holds their inaugural press conference at Morelia mid-festival.Since 2005, Mexican film institute Imcine has operate a producer-centered Lab workshop parallel towards the fest.Machete Prods.' Dwts Episode Recap: Tuesday, March. 4, 2011
Dwts hits the only numbers because it decreases to nine couples. Did Chaz make another comeback, or was there a shocking boot? Plus: Chubby Checker drops by.So Cher the serial tweeter vows in the future in a few days should Chaz survive tonight. Last-ditch voting ploy on her boy? Was she jealous he danced to some Sonny song and never among hers? Will the show rig the outcomes to snatch Cher? I kid, I kid. Kind of. Dance-smart, Chaz ought to be the one going, but discussing the trunk all over again must galvanize his group of followers. And he's only three points from the second-cheapest couple, Nancy and Tristan. We obtain lower to business following a wigged-out Mary J. Blige opens the show by going old-school with "Soul MatesInch (yes, it's almost two decades old, but Kristin may think it had been also large in 2005). First three safe couples:J.R. and KarinaRicki and DerekChaz and LaceyABC would like Cher on the program. Again, I kid. So save a chair for Cher in a few days! Maybe Kris Jenner's?Next two safe couples:Take advantage of and CherylNancy and TristanCarson and Anna, and Hope and Maks have been in risk.At this time, I am more worried about Hope than Carson. He's the entertainment factor and constant wit ("I believe I broke a cheekbone after i leaned directly into hug Bruno... or possibly I simply moved some filler.") that simply wins over audiences. Hope, however, does not have that large personality and has not were built with a breakthrough performance yet. My personal favorite thing about this whole segment, though, would be a shot of Kris Jenner whispering to Kim last evening that Take advantage of did a great job, and Kim apathetically concurs, never turning from you. Focal points, people.Next is, of course, among the show's better time-wasters: a 6 Levels of DWTS connecting the heavens. A few of the connections were apparent (Kristin dated Brody Jenner, stepbrother of Take advantage of), while some were interesting (Ricki purchased a house from Courteney and David) yet others were so Hollywood (Chaz and Chynna had playdates as their moms were buddies). It is a small world in the end... fitting as this is ABC.To gear us up for movie scores week - concocted to coincide with Julianne Hough's lengthy-looked forward to homecoming next Tuesday to advertise Footloose - Val choreographs an attractive number towards the Gone using the Wind theme, among my all-time faves. At the chance of sounding just like a total nerd, I am a complete sucker for movie scores. And never that you simply requested, but my movie scores playlist is easily the most-took in to 1 on my small ipod device. However I digress. The Macy's Stars of Dance follows to mark the 50th anniversary from the Twist, by having an assist from Estelle, Len... and Chubby Checker themself. I am confident he's putting on his Dungaree outfit from half a century back, but nonetheless, it is a very awesome, retro get for that show.To another Mary J. performance along with a semi-manageable group interview with Brooke - throughout which Nancy densely references "the twins" (also known as her kids) with no hint of irony - the rest of the three couples hit happens.Subsequent two safe couples:Chynna and TonyDavid and KymKristin and Mark continue to be in risk.Carson and Anna are declared safe, departing Kristin and Mark, and Hope and Maks because the final two. Unlike a week ago, we will not discover the actual bottom two.And also the couple departing is... Kristin and Mark. Not too surprising once Chaz was safe. I still think Chaz should have gone, however i don't believe Kristin would have survived much longer. Reality babes do not have an excellent history, talent (Audrina) or otherwise (Kim). "I am a little surprised, I'm going to be honest," Kristin states, before saying thanks to Mark and also the show.Tom creates The Legend of Sabrina Bryan, accusing audiences of thinking the 2 were safe and never voting. Or possibly they simply did not wish to election on their behalf? She wasn't exceptional nor that well-loved. Mark is pissed and concurs. Obviously. A minimum of we'll be able to escape of his mugging and showboating now.So that's all for Week 3. What have you think about the outcomes? Did the best person go back home? Will Cher really come in a few days? Did ABC rig the outcomes? (I kid. Seriously.) Have you perform the Twist too? Are you currently as excited for movie scores week like me? Who's your present pick to win? show less
